Reliable Connectivity: Using different networks with a single travel eSIM

You don't need to get multiple SIM cards!

· 3 min read

All over the world, countries have more than one telco provider; and it is not uncommon that different providers have different levels of coverages in different parts of the country. But, as our travels start to take us to the different places across the country, you might be wondering if it is possible to get reliable connectivity throughout your trip.

Getting multiple SIM cards with different providers

One option to consider would be to get multiple SIM cards from different local network providers.

While getting SIM cards from local network providers are often thought to be the most cost-effective and reliable, it also comes with a constraint that you can only use that specific network. That also means that if the network does not have good coverage in a region that you are in, you don't have the choice of switching networks to another one that provides better coverage.

With devices now supporting dual-SIMs and eSIMs, it has made it very convenient for travelers to get a (e)SIM from different providers and to switch between the providers as necessary. So, for some travelers, they might consider the option of buying (e)SIM cards from multiple local providers and to switch between the SIM cards when required.

Getting multiple SIM cards from different local providers could be a good option in places where the plans are cheap. But, aside from additional costs of getting multiple SIM cards, the process of getting multiple SIM cards from local providers could be troublesome. This is especially so with the tightening of policies in many countries worldwide, where you now have to provide a proof of identity to get a local SIM card.

A better option: Get a travel eSIM that works with multiple networks

Instead of getting multiple SIM cards, a better option - more cost-effective and much less troublesome - would be to simply get a travel eSIM that works with multiple networks.

Each travel eSIM plan will have a list of compatible networks that it can work with, and you will not be constraint to only use one network.

While the eSIM will typically hook on to a network with the best signal, it is possible for you to change and manually select which network you want to use. Simply go to your device settings and choose your preferred network.

That also means that if you are not satisfied with the performance of a single network, it is easy for you to switch to another network using the same eSIM.

With a travel eSIM that works with multiple networks, you will save yourself the hassle of having to get multiple SIM cards or eSIMs from different local providers. Travel eSIMs typically also do not require you to provide any proof of identity, further saving you the trouble and hassle when purchasing your eSIM.

Getting a single travel eSIM is also a more cost-effective option than if you were to get multiple SIM card plans from various telcos.

How to change network on your travel eSIM

You can change the network that your eSIM is using by following these steps: On iOS:

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Network Selection
  2. Turn off the Automatic option.
  3. You should now see the list of available networks.
  4. Choose your preferred network.

On Android:

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Network > Network Operators
  2. Turn off the 'Select automatically' option.
  3. You should now see the list of available networks.
  4. Choose your preferred network.
